Election Fever

Israeli elections are next tuesday and its starting to heat up here.  I thought I’d share with you some of the election posters I’ve seen around Ra’anana.  As far as “what people are saying here” to be honest I don’t have such a good feel for the political pulse here.  My hebrews not good enough to read the local papers yet, so I’m reading the same english language ones I read back in the US.  And while we have made friends, its not to the point yet where we’re having heated political discussions with them yet.  So for now, I feel more like an observer.  Albeit an excited one.  So here is some of what I’ve seen around town:

First of all, ehud barak came out swinging very early – his large billboards have been up for several weeks already:

“netanyahu above everything, or the law above everything” (translations are mine.  and remember, i’m only in ulpan level 2…)

“state of netanyahu or state of israel”
“state of halacha (jewish law) or democratic state”

And then there’s Avigdor Lieberman with one my personal favorites, which needs no translation:

Just in the past few days there have been a bunch of these posters put up for the Oztma Yehudit party.  If the “New Right” party (which is right of Likud) isn’t right enough for you, there’s Oztma.

“Bennett will abandon religious Zionism. Ben Gvir will save it”

Also in the past few days I’ve seen some of these, for Shass, the mizrachi haredi party.  Interesting that its in French.  (and since they don’t teach that in ulpan, no translation.  but if i remember my french correctly i think the jist of it is comparing netanyahu with or without Shass as a partner)

And for everyone back in america, i saved the best for last.  also needs no translation.
