School Meeting – AKA “we really don’t know any hebrew”

We had a school meeting two nights ago for the girls junior high school.  All the parents (we think it was just for the seventh grade, which is the youngest grade at this middle school, so all the parents and students are technically new to the system.  but we’re not 100% sure) met in the gym and the principal, teachers, and a few other people talked to us for about an hour.  In hebrew.  And we saw a few cute videos as well.  Also in hebrew. This may sound obvious to you but so far, almost every interaction we’ve had has been on an individual level where we can struggle to get by either with their broken english and/or our broken hebrew, or we can ask the person next us us for help, etc.  Either way, we’ve been able to get through pretty much every situation until now just fine despite the language situation.  This includes ordering food at restaurants, dealing with the various government agencies, going shopping, buying a car, opening a bank account, touring, etc.  This was different because it was our first group meeting where there was no option for us to muddle through person to person – the whole thing was just hebrew, period.  It just showed us 1) what it will probably be like for our kids when they start school in two days, and 2) just how much we still have to learn.  Good thing we start full time ulpan this coming week….

We also met in each classroom with their specific teachers.  She wrote on the board what they need to bring to class on the first day. So I took a picture of it and typed it into google translate when i got home.
