Lower-Middle School Traffic Duty

Most people who attend public school here live within walking distance of the school.  Every morning the town is flooded with little school children walking to school.  They have volunteers at many of the larger intersections with portable stop signs on long sticks with which they stop traffic to let the kids cross the street.  It does slow things down quite a bit but it is super-cute.  And is a constant reminder of how our population is growing and our future is bright.

The middle school that our boys attend is a unique school in that its a mix of religious and secular families and because of its special status, they changed the zoning laws for the school so that anyone in town can attend – not only those that live close by.  Because there is no school bus, a lot of parents have to drop off their kids by car.  This creates a complete mess on the street outside the school.  To make things run a bit smoother, they have several parking spaces out front specially marked for pick-up and drop-off only.  And they also have parent volunteers who help to get the kids out of cars, help take the backpacks out of the trunk and put them on the kids, and close the car doors, so the parents can just drive up, drop off, and drive away without having to even get out of the car.  Today was my turn.  Its super-cute.  You just open the door, say, “Boker Tov!” and help the little ones out of the car.  I even learned how to ask if there’s anything in the trunk in Hebrew!
