Tohu VaVohu – another cool biblical reference
Here’s another popular Israeli song with a cool biblical reference. I also like the song because it’s about a couple of islands in Thailand – Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, and Valerie and I stayed on Koh Samui for about a week during our honeymoon. It’s an unbelievable place, truly an undeveloped tropical paradise.
So when the Israeli group Hatikva 6 is describing how you can just “veg out” there, one of the ways they describe it is by saying you can just do nothing, or “tohu vavohu,” “תוהו ובוהו״” And that is a direct quote from the second verse of the bible:
בְּרֵאשִׁ֖ית בָּרָ֣א אֱלֹהִ֑ים אֵ֥ת הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וְאֵ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ׃
When God began to create heaven and earth—
וְהָאָ֗רֶץ הָיְתָ֥ה תֹ֙הוּ֙ וָבֹ֔הוּ וְחֹ֖שֶׁךְ עַל־פְּנֵ֣י תְה֑וֹם
the earth being unformed and void, with darkness over the surface of the deep…
The translation below translates it as “do nothing.” First of all, my understanding of biblical hebrew is that we don’t even really know what those words mean. They’re not used anywhere else in the bible. They are usually translated as “formless and void.” So when they’re talking about doing nothing on the island of Koh Samui and they say that line, its the ultimate in hyperbole. It doesn’t just mean “nothing” – It means a cosmic, ultimate, complete, utter nothingness, like what was before creation. And this is not a religious song – its just that these references are baked into the culture.
