Blood Drive and Channukah on the horizon

Several years ago an young Israeli man was killed in a terrorist attack.  His family and friends chose to honour his memory by hosting a blood drive every year on the anniversary of his death.  So this past Sunday I donated blood (first time doing that in Israel)  The procedure was basically the same as it was here except that the snacks that you get afterwards included “fuze tea” and a box of awesome pastries from Roladin cafe/bakery.

Later that same day we were in a grocery store and I noticed something in the bread and bakery section that hadn’t been there before.

You guessed it – sufganiyot.  The jelly filled cooked-in-oil pastries that are traditionally eaten on Channukah.  I walked right past them a few times until I thought, “could this be because the next holiday on the calendar is Channukah?  Sort of like in the US when right after Halloween all the Christmas decorations start to appear?”  I haven’t yet seen any actual Channukah decorations, or even the word itself written anywhere.  Nevertheless, here are the sufganiyot, right in the supermarket…..
