Hebrew is cute. Despite the obvious condescension, to my American ears Hebrew is biblical and holy and deep and meaningful, and sometimes in its modern formulation, just plain cute. I heard a story on the news today about how Jessica Meir, the American Jewish astronaut who returned from the space station a month or so ago. I think she was saying something about being isolated, given all the social isolation people are feeling due to the COVID pandemic (all in Hebrew, and I really only understood about 50% of it…) but when they mentioned her return to Earth, they said in Hebrew, היא חזרה לכדור הארץ – literally, “she returned to the land ball,”  or “the ball of land.”  Because, well… that’s just how you say “Earth” in Hebrew.   The Land-Ball. See what I mean?

from Jessica Meir’s twitter post – her feet, sporting Hannukah socks, floating in the cupola on the International Space Station, high above the Land-Ball
