Shavuot starts tomorrow night and this year its on thursday night and friday, so it goes right into shabbat on friday night and saturday.  Because most stores will be closed for both, you’ve got to get all your shopping done for both shavuot and shabbat ahead of time.  So yesterday we decided to stop at the local Rami Levy supermarket before picking the kids up from school. Since the COVID crisis, they are checking everyone’s temperature before entering the store, and limiting the number of people in the store at any one time, so there’s usually a small line outside, typically anywhere from three to maybe seven or eight people in line.  This was the scene outside the store yesterday.

And because its traditional to eat dairy on shavuot, they were stocking the fish counter with salmon way more than usual.  Normally they either have none at all, or there’s maybe three or four full salmon fillets lying on the ice, with maybe a few more in the back.  Yesterday they just kept brining out coolers full of salmon fillets and piling them up on the ice; more than I’ve every seen.  (We took two)

lots of salmon. and just FYI, that’s 68.90 NIS per kg, or 31.32 NIS per lb, or about $8.76 per lb. Not too bad, actually.

The one benefit is that usually the checkout lines are always full and backed up, but with COVID limiting the number of people in the store, the checkout lines have been much shorter, way more pleasant.  But not yesterday:

But at least we got what we needed, and despite being 20min late to pick up the kids, everything worked out OK.
